Focus During A Point


What tools and techniques can you use to maintain focus throughout a point? Learn what should you be thinking about.

Before going into a match, I may already know certain tendencies, strengths or weaknesses of my opponent so that I have an idea of what points may look like or at least know how I would like to develop them.

When starting a match, both players are usually trying to figure out engage each other within the first few games. If you don't know anything about your opponent going into the match, you should be able to pick up on a few key things in those first few games.

Within the point, I'm mostly focused on running my own patterns, and trying to hurt my opponent with my strengths versus their weaknesses, there are always going to be little adjustments to make whether within the point or the overall match. Sometimes you can get stuck in a certain pattern, and if it's a bad one that's hurting you, then you'll need to figure out how to get out of it and get back on track with your game plan.

A few things that should always be happening during a point that doesn't involve any strategy would include great footwork, strong body positioning, and posture, as well as quick recognition of the type of ball that your opponent is hitting back at you. Generally, it's best not to be thinking too much during a point and rather just let it flow and stay in the present moment. To allow that to happen. You should also be staying in your own routines and rituals between points. Over time you'll find certain rituals that work for you.

Lastly, the more prepared you are before the match, the easier it will be on the court. A good idea maybe to make flashcards of your game plan beforehand that you can refer to on changeovers if needed. Remember to always focus more on yourself and what you're trying to do well rather than your opponent
